Weather and Hours

As we are just getting dug out of our local history-making snow storm, the weather forecasters are starting to hype another possible storm this weekend!  Luckily, we brewers and vintners don’t have to worry about access to supplies.  We opened regular hours last weekend and will do the same this weekend no matter what Mother Nature decides to bring us.  For those that want to stock up before the possible nasty weather, we will have plenty of personnel on hand Thursday and Friday.  If you decide to wait for the weekend, you won’t need to call to see if we are open.  We will be here.  Come have some hot cocoa with us!

Hampton Store Update

The build out of the Hampton store is complete.  We are now in the process of interviewing employees for both the Hampton store and the Norfolk store.  If you are interesting in full or part-time work at either store, please contact us at the Norfolk store (757) 459-2739.  If you know anyone that might be interested in a position, please spread the word.  We would prefer to hire employees with brewing experience, but are willing to train someone if they are motivated and reliable.

Website Orders

We have tweaked the website a bit and will soon be adding more brewing kits and a better system for those brewers that wish to create their own recipes.  Currently we are shipping orders received by 3pm the same day and for residents of our local region, those orders are often delivered the very next day.

Comments

As always, we strive to serve you the best we can.  If you have any suggestions for how we may better serve you, please feel free to email your comments to brewshop@homebrewusa.com.

Brewsletter – November 2009 – Saturday Event!

November 4th, 2009

Join us this Saturday for National Teach a Friend To Brew Day!

Saturday, November 7th – 10am to late afternoon

The first Saturday of November is designated National Teach a Friend To Brew Day. HomebrewUSA hosts a party each year in celebration. This year the party was almost canceled due to our work overload associated with the opening of our new store in Hampton, VA. To our excitement, B.A.R.F (Beer and Ale Research Foundation) a local homebrew club approached us and offered to host the party!

This party is always a lot of fun and a great opportunity to ask all of your brewing questions. The club will set up and brew in the parking lot in front of HomebrewUSA. All homebrewers are invited to bring out your brewing equipment and join in the brew session! Brewers will begin setting up at 8am and the official party starts at 10am. B.A.R.F. will also host a cookout for the party! Join us for the fun and bring friends and family for an introduction to the art of brewing!

Also, if you have any friends interested in homebrewing, this is the perfect time for an introduction. Not only can they see brewing in action, but in recognition of “Teach a Friend To Brew Day” we always offer an additional 10% discount on all brewing equipment kits during this entire week. So come out, brew if you wish, enjoy the cookout and save some money if you have wanted to get a start in the art of homebrewing!

HomeBrewUSA Update

August 27th, 2009

We are sorry to say all of the Chocolate Raspberry Port wine kits are sold out.

However, we did order plenty of other wine kits, and everything from the Vintners Reserve to the top-of-the-line Estate Series are on sale with a 10% discount through the end of the week. If you can’t make it into the store, call us to order and we will hold it for you.

The window is closing to make wines so they will time to age a bit for holiday gift giving.

August BREWSLETTER from HomeBrewUSA

August 8th, 2009
  • New Store
  • Summer Brewing
  • New Award-Winning Recipe
  • Money Saving Tips
  • Chocolate Raspberry Port and Wine Discount
  • Just a note….

New Store:

After many pleas from our customers, we are pleased to announce we will be expanding to the Peninsula!  We have signed for a property on Mercury Blvd. just east of the new Peninsula Towne Center in Hampton, Virginia.  The build-out will take a couple of months and we hope we can still count on your patronage at the Norfolk store until it’s completion.  We will need the business to cover our gas to sit in the tunnel!

Summer Brewing:

Now is the perfect time to brew for the even hotter weeks to come.  To you diehard all-grain brewers, we salute you, but you won’t find us in front of a turkey burner right now in this humidity.  We opt for a couple of extract brews with steeping grains to get us through the duration of the summer because nothing tastes better than a refreshing homebrew on a hot summer day!  Liquid malt extract is tastier than it has ever been.  You can brew up a cream ale, wheat, blonde ale, pale ale, IPA or brown ale now and be patting yourself on the back in a couple of weeks when you toast another hot summer day!

New Award Winning Recipe:

Our congratulations go out to Douglas Griffin for his 2nd place win in the National Homebrew Competition with his American Brown Ale.  Doug was one of only two that placed from the state of Virginia.  Doug has graciously given us his award-winning recipe and it is now available at the store as an extract and all-grain kit.  Our many thanks Doug and way to go!

Money Saving Tips:

Don’t forget to bring back your malt buckets for reuse and savings on your next kit!  Reusing them also helps keep our planet clean.  “Save the Earth.  It is the only planet with beer!”  We also offer an in store 10% discount to all local homebrew club members and AHA members.   Website customers in the mid-Atlantic region also save money on shipping, and morning orders can generally be delivered next day!

Chocolate Raspberry Port and Wine Savings:

We have ordered a few Winexpert kits of the one-time release Chocolate Raspberry Port.  Call or come by now to reserve yours.  We only have a few and we anticipate they will be gone almost immediately.  We are again offering the 10% discount on all wine kits for the month of August.  The window is closing to make wines so they will time to age a bit for holiday gift giving.

Just a note…

Our friend Deborah, owner of Grape and Gourmet, includes funnies in her newsletter that always make me giggle.  So here is to you Deborah!

“Any woman can have the body of a 21 year old, as long as she buys him a few drinks first.”

Cheers!

March BREWSLETTER from HomeBrewUSA

March 26th, 2009

WEBSITE:

We are making a major update to our website to make navigation easier. Hopefully the changes will be finished within a few weeks. If you are having any problems at all, give us a call at the shop (757) 245-2739 and we can process your order the old fashioned way. Most Virginia orders are delivered next day so orders placed by Wednesday should definitely arrive by Friday in time for the weekend. Neighboring states do not take much longer so a little planning goes a long way for weekend brewing activities.

LIQUID MALT EXTRACT & SORGHUM:

In addition to the Extra Light, Golden, Amber, Dark, Wheat, Pilsner and Munich malt extracts we already carry in bulk, by this weekend we should also have Sorghum on tap. We already carry a number of GMO and Gluten Free Yeast.

NEW KIT RECIPES:

In keeping things fresh, we now have the Myers Brewing/ Sam Adams award winning hefeweizen recipe as a kit. Tommy D. of Alt Platz has also given us his recipe for “Mighty Broo” and that is available as a kit as well. Thanks Andy, Patrick and Tommy D.! You guys truly are the greatest!

APRIL HARVEST:

During the month of April, we will be offering a 20% discount for the purchase of two or more Winexpert wine kits. There is no reason to wait months for grape harvest when we can create wine now! They make wonderful holiday gifts and now is the perfect time to get them started so they can age to perfection in time for gift giving. Please note you will have to call in your order while the website is under construction to receive the discount.

HOMEBREW IN HARD ECONOMIC TIMES:

We all know that making beer, wine and mead is much cheaper than purchasing the same products, but did you know that a lifestyle including homebrewing saves you money in other ways? We were asked by “Brew Your Own” magazine to forward homebrew money saving ideas. This was easy because we just forwarded stories from our customers. Many people are opting to have homebrew parties instead of expensive weekend nights out on the town. People are also pulling out their brew pots on rainy days instead of heading to the mall. In a few weeks they have a tasty homebrew instead of credit card bills! Makes “cents” to brew! Okay, maybe that was a bad pun!

IN THE NEWS:

Utah one of the lasts states to change law legalizing homebrewing

March 24, 2009, Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. of Utah signed into law legislation that makes homebrewing beer legal. The “Exemption for Alcoholic Beverage Manufacturing License” was sponsored by Representative Christine A. Johnson and made Utah the 46th state to legalize homebrewing. The US Government made homebrewing legal on a federal level in 1978. Since then all but four states; Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Oklahoma have made homebrewing legal. Click here to read the full article.

YEAST VIALS:

Please return your yeast vials to the shop for recycling. We are well on our goal of 5000 and if everyone returned their vials, we would meet our goal in a very short time!

BEER BREWING CLASS:

The next beer making class is Saturday, April 11th at 11am. This is a beginning/intermediate extract class. The cost is $10 and the class size is limited. Reserve your spot in person or by phone (757) 459-2739.

This will include military personnel both active duty and retired, fire fighters, police officers and ambulance personnel. Please show your ID at the register. Since we try to keep our prices low, this discount cannot be taken in combination with other discounts. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Upcoming Events:

8TH Annual Virginia Beer Festival

April 25-26, 2:00pm-6:00pm at the Nauticus Pier. More information can be found at www.festevents.org. The tickets are less expensive if purchased in advance. Last year the event sold out early in the day and many people were turned away at the gates.

National Homebrew Day

May 2, all day at HomebrewUSA. Bring your brewing equipment and join us for a brew party or just stop by for fun and food if you can’t brew that day. Brewers usually begin setting up around 9am. HOPS & GRAINS UPDATE:

This year brings good news on the hops front! Most hops will be available without limitations and at lower prices. There are a few exceptions. Czech Saaz is looking limited and American high alpha hops did not produce as much due to weather conditions. They will be available but at a slightly higher cost than lower alpha hops. Will be also be carrying more hops varieties this year (including Warrior!).

Note: Hallertauer Hops will be available within the next two weeks.

Grain prices have also slightly decreased. More crops were planted but the prices are still high because farmers also suffered due to this past year’s extremely high gas prices. We do have great news when it comes to variety. In addition to the Briess, Dingemann’s and Gambrius malts, we now carry the entire line of Weyermann malts.

LEAF HOPS SALE

In our effect to provide only the freshest ingredients, we are selling all of last year’s leaf hops at the reduced price of $1.99/ounce. These hops have been vacuum-sealed and stored in a deep freezer all year so very minimal alpha acid lose has occurred. These hops are still fine quality hops, but we must make room in our freezers for the current crops.

SAKE

During this coming week we will be receiving Koji mold spores and White Labs Sake yeast for the production of homemade sake. We will now carry the spores year round since White Labs will be processing the yeast year round instead of their previous practice of only releasing it as a limited Platinum Strain.

WINE KITS

We have a few Winexpert wine kits on special right now at 25% off regular prices. We are making room for this current year’s releases. We try to maintain our stock with the freshest wine kits. Winexpert kits have product codes to determine the date it was produced. Look on the top of the box for two groups of numbers, seven digits, followed by four digits.

Example:

0029504 0234
Which will break down like this:
00/295/04 0234

00 These two digits are for internal use and you can ignore them.
295 This indicates the day of the year from January first, in this case October 22nd.
04 These two digits indicate the year it was produced, in this case, 2004.

NEW LIQUID MALT EXTRACTS

Over the next two weeks we will be changing brands on a number of the bulk malt extracts we currently carry. We will also be offering new extracts. We decided to make this change for economic and informational reasons. We will be moving from United Canadian malt extract to Briess malt extracts for the majority of our malt extracts. The Briess website has a plethora of information about their malts and extracts. This is beneficial for those extract brewers keeping records, designing recipes and tweaking recipes for competitions. The new malts being phased in are:

  • Muntons Plain Super Light (slightly more expensive due to shipping costs from (Europe).
  • Briess Pilsen Light (Lightest liguid extract available on the market (2-5L). The butterscotch color is perfect for beer styles requiring a light, delicate base.)
  • Briess Golden Light (Basic extract for all light-colored, lightly flavored lagers & ales.)
  • Briess Sparkling Amber (Basic extract for all darker, more flavorful beers with its roasty, rich flavor.)
  • Briess Traditional Dark (Basic extract for very rich, flavored beers.)
  • Briess Bavarian Wheat (65% Malted Wheat, Basic extract for light flavored beers. Use as a base for fruit flavored beers. Add 1-2 T to other brews to improve head retention.)
  • United Canadian Munich Malt (80% Pale/ 20% Munich)

The Briess website is www.briess.com. Follow the homebrewing link once you are on the site for information on their grains and liquid malt extracts.

CARBOYS:

The 6½ gallon carboys are again available. As with the other carboys, they are now much more expense since they are only being made in Italy.

Brewing Classes:

All-Grain: Robert Kirkpatrick, the president of B.A.R.F. (Beer and Ale Research Foundation has graciously offered (I only pulled his hair once, I promise!) to teach an all-grain brewing class at his home Saturday, February 22nd at 11am. The cost of the class is $25 dollars per person and will include lunch. Robert and his wife, Karen, plan to donate all funds, after the cost of lunch and supplies, to a non-profit organization. (Okay, maybe now I feel a little badly for pulling his hair.) The class size will be limited so please sign up as soon as possible at the shop to reserve your spot.

We hope to offer more all-grain classes throughout the year with many accomplished home brewers so stay tuned to future newsletters for the announcement.

Extract: HomebrewUSA will be hosting an extract brewing class Saturday, February 7th at 10 am. The cost of the class is $10 and again, the class size is limited so make your reservations as soon as possible. The $10 is basically a place-holder. It will be refunded with any store purchase of $10 or more the day of the class.

RECYCLING PROJECTS:

Please help us recycle and keep your brewing cost down by reusing your bulk extract malt buckets. We will subtract $1.50 from any HomebrewUSA brew kit when you bring your bucket back for re-use.

Please return your liquid yeast vials to the shop for recyling. White Labs will bring the yeast and conduct a brewing class if we collect 5000 for recycling! You help us collect the vials and we will cover the cost of a venue to hold the class!

Bottles are also a major expense. We collect bottles from local restaurants and place them in the shop at no cost when they are available. We also have customers donating bottles when they make the jump to kegging. Please consider these recycled bottles at no cost the next time you need bottles.

Cool Finds:

Okay, I finally took a half-day off and it wasn’t even a major holiday! (Although it turned into one!) A couple that shops in the store invited me to visit their pub in Elizabeth City. It is called Coaster’s Downtown Draught House and it is located at 216 N Poindexter Street in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. I was exhausted and needed a change of scenery so I set my mind to the task of considering a 45-minute drive to Elizabeth City. I decided within 5 minutes and I am so glad I did. The owners, Debbie and Dale have created an oasis nestled in the historic downtown district of this small harbor town. Viewing their tap collection alone was worth the drive and their beer selection was incredible. They have 24 fine imported and micro-brewed beers on tap at all times, along with an extensive bottled beer offering, and might soon add five more taps to their ever-changing selections. They also have the greatest Wednesday night tradition (this is how my half day turned into a major holiday since the next day was Wednesday and New Year’s Eve). They choose a different brewery every Wednesday and offer a number of that brewery’s beers on tap. Every time you order a beer from the chosen brewery, you receive a glass from that brewery! They also told me that their bar manager, Andy (also a homebrewer and great chef) was going to be cooking a spread complete with one of my favorites, lamb, for New Year’s Eve dinner the following day. Brewery glasses, great beer and a buffet with lamb and I completely forgot the workaholic I had become the previous year! I had to extend my stay. Microtel offers inexpensive rooms that are new, clean, and again, inexpensive. I was already a fan of Coaster’s and when I learned this beautiful buffet was provided at no charge to show their customers appreciation, I knew I was now to be a life-long fan! If you need a short get away, make the drive. I promise you will not be disappointed!

Until next time,
Cheers!
